7. About 1.2 billion gallons of potable water are used in New Jersey each day.

8. 1.2 billion people worldwide do not have access to clean water.

25. Hippocrates, known as the father of medicine, directed people in Greece to boil and strain water before drinking it.

26. In the 1950’s scientists began to suspect that water might carry diseases. Although earlier treatment of water could make the water safer, it was mainly done to improve the taste, smell or looks of the water.

27. The first United States water plant with filters was built in 1872 in Poughkeepsie, New York.

28. In Altona, Germany in 1892, the water from the Elbe River filtered before drinking. At the time, hundreds of people from nearby Hamburg (which did not filter their water) died from cholera. The citizens of Altona were untouched by this waterborne disease.

29. In 1908, Jersey City, New Jersey and Chicago, Illinois were the first water supplies to be chlorinated in the United States.

30. The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) of 1974 represents the first time that public drinking water supplies were protected on a federal (national) level in the United States. Amendments were made to the SDWA in 1986 and 1996.

31. New Jersey Legislature approved the New Jersey Safe Drinking Water Act, which authorized the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to assume primacy and enforcement responsibility for the Federal Safe Drinking Water Program.

34. Water boils at 212o Fahrenheit or 100o Celsius.

This statement from a Brookfield News Times interview with the makers of the bottled water documentary “Tapped” largely speaks for itself:

“A lot of major film festivals are sponsored by Nestle,” Soechtig said. “We were wondering why we weren’t getting into Cannes. We thought, is our film not good enough? Then we realized they have a hand in everything.”

Nestle asked the Hot Springs Documentary Film Institute in Louisiana to not show the documentary, the Louisiana State University of Shreveport student newspaper, The Almagest, reported. The screening board denied Nestle’s request.

“I can’t help but think if they tried to pull us out of one town, Nestle has tried to pull us out of others,” Soechtig said.

The corporations have put pressure on commercial distributors, Walrath said, so he and Soechtig are distributing the film independently.

My wife and I are former employees of Nestle’ Waters at their newer plant in Cabazon, CA. I worked in the QA lab and my wife worked production. We are just getting involved in exposing this behemoth monster company for what they are. I was required to do some outrageously unsafe things during the ramping up of that facility. Discovering what I’m learning about the company’s irresponsible behavior toward the environment is no surprise. The waste we saw on a daily basis was staggering.
